01 / THE PLATFORM

Measure today.
Ask more tomorrow.

UMO is Cognify’s synchronised measurement platform. It captures and retains voltage and current waveforms so different analyses can return to the same electrical record—investigating the behaviour of the wider system, network events and changes at individual connections.

01

Record the waveform

Sensors at meter boxes passively capture voltage and current at the connection. The underlying waveforms are retained for multiple analyses.

02

Share a time reference

A common GPS time reference allows independent instruments to be compared as channels of one distributed measurement system.

03

Keep developing the analysis

Investigate an event, compare sites or revisit a recording with a new method. When the evidence is in the record, new analyses can use hardware already installed.

Installed today, with applications we can still develop tomorrow.

02 / ONE PLATFORM, SHARED VALUE

To a single connection.

01 /

Look across the system.

Compare frequency behaviour and shared oscillations across electrically separated sites. The same recordings can be revisited to investigate how a local event relates to wider system behaviour.

03 / BUILT ON MEASUREMENT

Built on recordings.
Open to new questions.

Trial recordings have already supported analyses of common frequency behaviour, shared voltage events, local electrical response and inverter switching signatures. Each reads a different part of the same underlying record.

OBSERVED / MACRO

Shared system behaviour

A correlated frequency component near 0.3 Hz was tracked for five days across four trial sensors, including sites on different bulk supply points.

OBSERVED / NETWORK

Events and electrical response

Shared voltage steps revealed electrical boundaries between sites. Ordinary changes in connection current supported estimates of shared network-path impedance. Recorded switching signatures offered another view of connected equipment.

RESEARCH GOAL

A Large Waveform Model

Our goal is to train a model on synchronised waveform recordings, constrained by network structure and electrical physics. Existing analyses would help provide the training targets.

ENERGY QUEENSLAND / LETTER OF SUPPORT

A new level of visibility into network behaviour.

“We understand that this approach is revolutionary in its simultaneously passive, but high fidelity modelling of the movement of energy through the grid from macro (Market level - AEMO), to micro (LV circuits).”

“We believe Cognify's approach to passive observation is likely to unlock simulation and diagnostic capabilities beyond what is currently available, supporting improved quality of supply for customers and more dynamic integration of distributed energy resources. We welcome the opportunity to observe its application in a real-world operational context.”

04 / A CLOSER LOOK

A few good questions.

What makes UMO different?

UMO keeps the underlying voltage and current waveforms on a common time reference. Different analyses can return to the same recordings, comparing observations across sites and across scales. The measurement platform can remain in place as the questions and software evolve.

Why keep the waveform record?

A question may arise days after an event, or a useful analysis may be developed after the sensors are installed. Retaining the waveforms lets us return to what each instrument recorded at that moment. The recording’s bandwidth, calibration and sensor placement determine which questions it can answer.

What is a Large Waveform Model?

It is a research goal: a model that would learn from synchronised voltage and current recordings across the network. Electrical topology, physical laws and existing analyses would help constrain and train it. One proposed test is to estimate a withheld recording from other sites, then compare the prediction with the actual measurement.
